Chinanews, May 18 - Commissioners from the International Olympic
Committee (IOC) attending the sixth plenary session of the IOC
Coordination Commission for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing inspected
several Olympic venues including the National Stadium and the National
Swimming Center which are under construction on the morning of May 16 and
lavished praises on the progress of the venue construction.
"The changes are remarkable. Obviously, Beijing and the Beijing
Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG) have done
a lot of work," said IOC Coordination Commission Chairman Hein
Verbruggen. After the inspection, Verbruggen rated Beijing's Olympic
venue design and construction as extraordinary and added that athletes
will be the major beneficiaries of these extraordinary venues.
Wu Ching Kuo, an IOC commissioner from Taipei, participated in the
appraisal and examination of the design scheme for the National Swimming
Center and thereby cherished a special feeling to the "Water Cube." On
the construction site of the "Water Cube," Wu carefully inquired of the
person in charge of the construction site about the environmental
protection measures of the venue. Wu indicated that the "Bird's Nest" and
the "Water Cube" have avant-garde design concepts. He said that
architecture is part of culture believes that the Beijing Olympics will
be a perfect demonstration of the Olympic architectural culture. Wu also
suggested that Beijing attach great importance to venue operation and
management and considers it a very important measure for Beijing to start
training service personnel in related venues.
After-game utilization of the venues remains one of the major concerns of
IOC. At the construction site of the Olympic Park, commissioners of the
IOC Coordination Commission listened to the person in charge of the site
on the archery range, hockey stadium and tennis court. Hearing that the
archery range and hockey stadium will be dismantled after the Olympic
Games and rebuilt into greenbelts, Verbruggen and IOC Coordination
Commission Vice Chairman Kevan Gosper nodded to show their praise for
this measure.
