China to conduct inspection of Yangtze River dolphin

Chinanews, May 15 (By Jiang Jinming) - Reporters learned from the Wuhan
research institute of aquatic organism under the Chinese Academy of
Sciences on April 14 that starting this November, the institute will
inspect the Yangtze river dolphins in at the middle and lower reaches of
the Changjiang River and the Yangtze finless porpoises at the entire
reaches with the help of a Swiss Yangtze River dolphin protection fund.
It will be the first all-round inspection of the Yangtze River dolphins,
one of China's national treasures.
Yangtze River dolphins live in the middle and lower reaches of the
Yangtze River. This precious aquatic mammal species is one of the four
dolphins that live in freshwater, unique in China and among the most
endangered in China and even in the world. Such dolphins numbered more
than 400 in the early 1980s but decreased to less than 100 in the mid
1990s and there are only tens of Yangtze River dolphins now.
Hubei TV reported that earlier this year, dolphin experts of China,
America, the UK and Switzerland conducted a nine-day preliminary
investigation into several segments of the Changjiang River but have not
found any Yangtze River dolphin yet.
It is learnt that the main purposes of preliminary researches are to find
out the number of Yangtze River dolphins, establish a new way of
freshwater dolphin investigation applicable to the river's environment
and make a detailed plan for the inspection of dolphins in the whole
Yangtze River this November.
