Agricultural production brings increasing pollution
www.chinanews.cn 2006-07-06 08:59:12
Chinanews, Beijing, July 5 C China has managed to use 7% of the worlds
territory to raise 22% of the worlds population. While the country has
accomplished a great task to meet the basic needs of its people, it also
pays a price, as pollution caused by agricultural production becomes more
and more severe in China now.
Gao Jixi, director of the Ecological Department of the Chinese Academy of
Environmental Science and Research Institute, made the statement Tuesday
at the Sino-Italy Environmental week.
He said that with large amount of agricultural production activities,
fertilizer has become the main form of chemical pollutants. At present,
China uses 41 million tons of fertilizer every year, or 400 kilograms of
fertilizer on every hectare of land, far exceeding the amount used in
developed countries, where the safety limit standard for fertilizer usage
is set at 250 kilograms per hectare.
The overly use of agrochemicals destroyed the ecological system and
biodiversity of the farmland. It caused pollution to the air, soil and
water. Chemical residue left in the plants become poisonous to the
livestock and people. Many agricultural products are returned or
forbidden to be exported, since their chemical residues exceed the safety
limit, causing an economic loss to the tune of RMB millions.
In order to solve this problem, Gao suggested promoting safe agricultural
production throughout the country. In light of the different situations,
different criteria should be set for the maximum usage of fertilizer and
agrochemicals. Farmers should also know the correct methods of using
them. In certain areas, environmental-friendly agricultural mode, such as
green foods and genetic foods, should be promoted in areas where they are
suitable.
